The Experience

Why the Second Day Changes the Trip

A day trip reaches the sand at the worst hour. An overnight reaches it at the best one.

Highlights

  • The lowest-priced overnight desert tour departing Djerba
  • Tataouine's market and a guided walk through Chenini
  • The Ksar Ghilane hot spring, then a night at a desert camp
  • Sand bread baked in the embers and a sky with no light pollution
  • Matmata's pit dwellings and the mountain village of Toujane on day two

What's Included

  • Air-conditioned 4x4 for both days
  • Licensed driver and licensed guide for both days
  • One night in a tent at the desert camp
  • Dinner and breakfast at the camp
  • Lunch on both days
  • Assistance throughout

How an Overnight Desert Tour Works

What the camp is, what is provided, and what you carry.

  1. You Pack a Small Bag

One overnight bag, not your suitcase. The rest stays at your Djerba hotel, and the tour returns you to the same address on the second evening.

  2. Day One Ends on the Sand

The first day is the drive plus the stops — Tataouine, Chenini, the Ksar Ghilane hot spring. The camp is where it stops, in time for sunset.

  3. The Camp Is Fixed, Not Carried

Permanent Bedouin-style tents with bedding provided, dinner cooked on site, breakfast in the morning. Nobody pitches anything.

  4. Day Two Is the Return, With Stops

Matmata's pit houses and the mountain village of Toujane on the way back, reaching the island in the evening.

Two Ways to Spend a Night in the Sahara

One covers more ground. One gives you more desert.

The Overnight Option

Why an Overnight From Djerba Costs Less Than a Day Trip

The price of a two-day Sahara tour is mostly the price of the driving — and Djerba has already done most of it.

The cheapest overnight desert tour in this catalogue costs $48. Several of the day trips on the same island cost more. That looks like a mistake and it is not one — it is what happens when the driving stops being the product.

The arithmetic

A two-day Sahara tour sold in Hammamet or Sousse spends most of its first day on the A1 getting south. You pay for those kilometres, for the driver’s hours, and usually for a hotel rather than a camp. From Djerba the sand is a morning away. The $48 two-day 4x4 is not cutting anything out; it simply starts 400km closer, and 475 guests have rated it 4.7 out of 5.

So the question is not whether an overnight is affordable. It is which kind you want.

Two shapes of night

They are genuinely different products.

The two-day 4x4 with a camp night is the full southern circuit with a bed in the middle of it. Day one takes the Chahbania salt flat, the market at Tataouine, a guided hour in Chenini and the Ksar Ghilane hot spring, and finishes at the camp with sand bread baked in the embers. Day two is Matmata’s pit dwellings and the mountain village of Toujane on the way home. Both lunches, dinner and breakfast are included, and the vehicle is a 4x4 for the whole two days. It is the most ground anyone covers from this island for the money.

The sunset-and-sunrise tent night at $144 is the opposite instinct. It picks up at 11am, drives south through the flat part of the day, and gives you the dunes at the two hours that matter — sunset and sunrise — before returning late the next morning. Fewer stops, more desert, and your second afternoon is free. 4.8 out of 5 from 574 guests.

If you have never slept in a desert, the second one is built around the experience. If you want to see southern Tunisia, the first one shows you more of it.

What a camp night actually is

Both are permanent camps, not expeditions. Fixed Bedouin-style tents, bedding supplied, a shared dinner, a fire. You are not carrying a pack and nobody is putting up canvas. Facilities are basic and shared; the sand outside the tent is the point.

Two things reliably surprise people. The first is the cold — between November and March the temperature drops as soon as the sun does, and a fleece is the difference between a good night and a long one. The second is the sky. There is no light within an hour of the camp, and guests write about that more than about the dinner.

Where the two-day tours go that day trips do not

Nowhere further south, in truth. Both routes above camp at or near Ksar Ghilane, which the day trips also reach.

What the second day buys is the rest of the region: Matmata and Toujane on the way home, which a Ksar Ghilane day trip has no room for, and the hours at either end of the night, which a day trip cannot reach at all.

Two day itineraries here do pair the dunes with Matmata — the $69 small-group 4x4 and the $85 jeep safari — and both compress the pair into a single run. An overnight is what lets you take them on separate days instead.

For the daytime-only alternatives, the Sahara day trips reach the same oasis and are back by dark.

"The driver picked us up from the hotel, and then we joined 2 wonderful people with whom we experienced this adventure together until the end. We stopped very often along the way, discovering new places one after the other, and we had the opportunity to use the restroom or buy snacks every now and then. The organizer made sure we had water. Each stop was very interesting. The camp located in the oasis was incredibly well-organized. There was a small restaurant, plenty of toilets, hot showers, electricity in the tents (most of the time), and it was warm. We had a lot of activities. We had a local dinner, the opportunity to see the sunset on quads (available for purchase), and at night we could admire the stars in the desert. The next day, after breakfast, we set off on the return journey, during which we also had a few unusual stops. We recommend this tour. The guide is great, and the small group is a plus."

"Great experience! We're leaving with stars in our eyes! We were lucky to have Mohamed as our live guide, who is passionate! And Rafik as the driver! Excellent. I totally recommend it! Don't hesitate! The scenery is breathtaking, and a little bonus: the starry sky in the desert is incredible."

The night under an incredible starry sky remains a memorable moment, and the meals were absolutely delicious and prepared with care. A big thank you and a special mention to Rafik, our top driver for his driving and friendliness, as well as to Mohamed, a passionate and attentive live guide who made this day trip even more exceptional. A big thank you to our live guide, who was absolutely amazing! He was able to adapt to the weather conditions and modify the program when necessary, while making sure we made the most of every moment. He was attentive, available, and always in a good mood. "Great activity. Very knowledgeable and humorous guide: Jalal. Very professional and friendly driver: Karim. Busy and well-kept schedule. To improve: Food: to be slightly improved in variety and quantity. External service provider network: quad biking, vendors in Tataouine: definitely to be improved: I was not satisfied on this point at all, neither with the quad biking nor with the spice vendor, who is a rip-off. But the core of the activity is very good in itself: route / transportation / live guide"

"A unique and beautiful two-day experience with an overnight stay in a tent next to a desert oasis where you could also take a bath. Our guide went to great lengths to please us and make sure we were comfortable at all times during the trip. The local, high-quality food, dinner with bread baked in the sand to the sound of drums; and then in the morning, a wonderful outdoor breakfast in front of the desert dunes. I would also like to give a special mention to our fantastic driver Ameur, a real local who was very knowledgeable, kind, and patient in explaining things and repeating them for each language of our group; all his advice was invaluable in making the experience the best possible. It was all truly unforgettable!!"

"This was an experience of a life time. Truly a bucket list activity. If you are visiting the area I would 100% recommend this. Every single activity was out of this world. Not a single bad thing to say about any of this trip. The tour guides Tutu and rafik were incredible, truly amazing people. They made us feel safe and took good care of everyone. They had so much knowledge and we learned so much. They were so friendly and I never wanted it to end. They spoke good English as well as about 6 other languages. They also helped us to get fair prices in all of the markets. Every single stop on the trip was one of a kind filled with traditional experiences and memories for a lifetime 100%worth every penny and then some. If you do anything on your visit here make it this, you will not regret it"
