4x4 Desert Tours From Djerba

Almost every desert tour on this island advertises a 4x4, and on some of them the vehicle is decoration. On the rest it is what makes the itinerary possible at all. Telling the two apart takes five minutes before you book, and it decides both how rough your day is and where you get to.

What “4x4 tour” can mean

On a Djerba listing the phrase covers three quite different days:

1. a sightseeing tour that uses a 4x4 to get around
2. a mixed day of road and desert track, which is what most tours to Ksar Ghilane are
3. a genuine off-road desert raid, with long stretches on sand

If the off-road driving is the reason you are booking, ask the operator how much of the day is actually spent on sand or tracks.

Where the tours go

Ksar Ghilane is the usual Sahara destination: a palm oasis on the edge of the Grand Erg Oriental, with a warm spring you can swim in. Most tours add one or more of these on the way there or back:

• Tataouine and its ksour
• the hill village of Chenini
• Ksar Hadada

• Matmata and its cave houses

Where the road stops

The route south is asphalt for about three hours: the causeway at El Kantara, Medenine, the climb onto the Dahar plateau. Somewhere past Beni Kheddache the surface gives out and the piste begins — stony at first, then soft sand for the approach to Ksar Ghilane.

That final stretch is the whole argument. It is why the day runs to ten hours, not seven, and why the itineraries that take this line run jeeps. There is also an asphalt road into the oasis by way of Matmata and the Douz road, which a careful driver can manage in an ordinary car; the 4x4 tours use the track because it is shorter from the Ksar Hadada side and because they drive out onto the dunes. So you do not need a 4x4 just to reach the oasis. You need one once you leave the normal roads for the sand around it.

Routes that stay on the plateau — Tataouine and Chenini, the guided market days — need no such vehicle, and several of them honestly say so.

Is there real off-road driving?

On some itineraries, yes. In the listing, look for wording such as:

“Transport by 4x4” on its own is a different promise. It can describe an air-conditioned vehicle that spends most of the day on asphalt.

How rough is rough

Bumpy rather than frightening. The drivers do this every day, the sand sections are short relative to the whole, and the vehicles are air-conditioned. Dune bashing in the Dubai sense, with repeated fast runs over the crests, is not part of any of these itineraries. Tunisian 4x4 tours are about crossing the desert and seeing it. If you want the thrill, the quad bikes at the oasis are the place for it, and they are extra.

What the small group buys

A jeep seats a handful of people, so these tours are small whether or not the listing says so. That has a practical consequence: the plan can change. 4x4, quad or camel?

Can you self-drive off-road?

Not unless you have off-road experience and a suitable vehicle. The asphalt road by way of Matmata is fine in an ordinary car, but the track and the sand around Ksar Ghilane are a remote place to learn.

4x4 tours are often suitable for children. Check three things before you book:

• how rough the off-road sections are
