Visiting the Douz Sahara Festival 2026 from Djerba

Douz Sahara Festival 2026: the announced December dates and what to check, the programme day by day, getting from Djerba to Douz, hotels and camps, 2-day tours and practical tips.

Updated October 2026

The 58th International Festival of the Sahara in Douz is announced for 19 to 22 December 2026 (Saturday to Tuesday), according to the organizing committee’s preparation meeting reported by Tunisie Numérique and Gnet on 7 September 2026. Some reports give 23 to 26 December instead, so check the dates again before you book anything non-refundable. Douz is roughly 3.5 to 4.5 hours’ drive from Djerba via the Ajim–Jorf ferry and Gabès. The easiest way to go is a 2- or 3-day desert tour that spends at least one full afternoon at the festival grounds on Place H’naiech (Hnich). If you’re going independently, book a Douz hotel or desert camp early: the festival falls at the start of the Tunisian school holidays and the Christmas–New Year peak.

Dates note: The Tunisie Numérique report of 7 September 2026 gives 19–22 December 2026. We found no official programme or later announcement by late October, and some travel sites list 23–26 December. Tunisian festival dates and programmes have changed at short notice before. Check again in early December, with your hotel or tour operator, before paying for anything non-refundable.

What is the International Festival of the Sahara?

Douz calls itself the “gateway to the Sahara”, and its festival is one of the oldest in Tunisia. It traces its roots to 1910, when it began under the French protectorate as a camel festival, with mehari camel races and folk games. In 1967 it became an international festival, and local writer M’hammed Marzougui did much to shape it. Today it celebrates the Mrazig and other formerly nomadic tribes of the Nefzaoua region: their caravans, horsemanship, poetry, weddings and hunting with sloughi greyhounds.

It’s a big event for a small desert town. Local press reported nearly 40,000 visitors from outside the region at the 2021 edition, with organizers expecting close to 50,000 in 2022. The 2025 (57th) edition ran 25–28 December and was opened by Tunisia’s Tourism Minister. On New Year’s Eve 2025, Douz’s tourist zone reported 86% occupancy, so expect the town’s hotels to be close to full in late December.

What to expect: day-by-day programme highlights

The 2026 programme hadn’t been published when we checked in late October 2026. Past editions have kept the same core scenes: the caravan, the Douleb, the Marhoul, the sloughi hunt, mehari races, the Bedouin wedding, Okazia poetry and the Samour night. The outline below follows the 2025 (57th) edition, laid over the announced 2026 dates. Treat it as a guide to what each day is likely to hold, not the official schedule, and shift it by four days if the 23–26 December dates turn out to be right.

Run-up days (likely around 16–18 December). In 2025, three days of side events ran before the official opening: a showcase of traditional costume, a long-distance Sahara trek, a documentary competition, a poetry prize, and a Bedouin gasba (reed flute) music competition.

Day 1 (Saturday 19 December on the announced dates): opening parade. The official opening is a procession of local and visiting folk troupes from the Martyrs’ Square to the crafts market. The day also brings children’s activities, exhibitions at the Sahara Museum and poetry evenings. In 2025 the first night ended with a large staged show at Place Hnich recreating desert life.

Day 2 (Sunday 20 December): Horse Day. Arab horse and mehari (racing camel) races and fantasia-style displays, where riders gallop in formation and fire rifles. Expect the classic arena scenes: the caravan (El Gafila), the Marhoul (nomad migration), the Douleb and the traditional Bedouin wedding.

Day 3 (Monday 21 December): Camel Day. In 2025 this day included the start of the International Mehari Marathon, plus sloughi hunting demonstrations, which draw some of the biggest crowds. In the evening comes the Samour night, held at the crafts market because Douz has no theater big enough for the major evening shows.

Day 4 (Tuesday 22 December): finals and closing. Race finals, prize-giving, the last day of the crafts market and a closing show. In 2025 it ended with “Luminous Nights of Douz” concerts.

Throughout: the crafts and economic exhibition, food stalls selling fresh Deglet Nour dates from the Nefzaoua harvest, poetry contests, and evening concerts aimed at a younger crowd.

The Sahara Museum (Musée du Sahara). Opened in 1997, it covers nomad tents, camel branding, tattoo symbols, jewelry and horse tack. Winter hours are roughly 09:30–16:00/16:30, closed Mondays, with a small entry fee of a few dinars. Bring cash and arrive early.

How to get from Djerba to Douz

There’s no direct public transport. The usual routes leave the island on the Ajim–Jorf ferry (a 15–30 minute crossing) or over the El Kantara causeway to Zarzis. They then go through Gabès, and on via Kebili or the Matmata–Tamezret road. The ferry is the main bottleneck: in peak summer 2025, waits of 30 minutes to 3 hours were reported, and a new 80-car ferry is due in 2026. Winter queues are usually shorter, but leave early anyway.

Louage (shared taxi) Houmt Souk → Gabès → (Kebili) → Douz4–6 h plus waitingAbout 28–30 TND in totalBudget backpackers

Louage tips: louages leave from the Houmt Souk bus station (gare routière). Houmt Souk → Gabès costs about 10–15 TND. Gabès → Douz costs about 13–15 TND, usually changing at Kebili. At the morning queues in Djerba, travelers report waits of 2–4 hours. During the festival, louages fill quickly with Tunisian families, so travel the day before.

Flying: Djerba–Zarzis (DJE) is the closest major airport. Tozeur–Nefta (TOE) is about 2 hours from Douz, but flights from Djerba usually route via Tunis, so it rarely saves time.

Where to stay: Douz hotels, desert camps and Tozeur

Book as early as you can. Douz has only a handful of large hotels, and tour operators block rooms for the festival and New Year.

Hotels in Douz’s tourist zone:

  • Sahara Douz: about 150 rooms with indoor and outdoor pools and a spa. Booking.com guest score about 8.0, with off-season rates from about US$89 a night for two. A mid-range choice.
  • El Mouradi Douz: about 180 rooms, pools and hot tubs, right by the dunes. Reviews mention dated rooms but friendly staff.
  • Mehari Douz and Sun Palm Douz: simpler four-star-style hotels used by many tour groups.
  • The Residence Douz: the upmarket option.
  • Budget: Hotel 20 Mars and small guesthouses near the center, within walking distance of the festival.

Festival-week prices will be well above the off-season rates quoted here. To compare everything in town, see all stays in Douz.

Desert camps: For the full experience, spend one night at a camp in the dunes (Camp Mars, Zmela, or the camps around Zaafrane and Ksar Ghilane). Read the guide to sleeping in a Sahara desert camp first. Late-December nights are cold, so check the camp provides heavy blankets.

Tozeur as a base: If Douz is full, Tozeur has many more hotels and is about 2 hours away across the Chott el Djerid salt lake. Tozeur also hosts its own International Oasis Festival in late December: the 46th edition ran 26–29 December 2025. The 2026 dates hadn’t been announced by late October. If the two festivals overlap, a Douz-plus-Tozeur loop gives you two festivals on one trip.

Suggested itineraries: festival plus desert

A) 2 days from Djerba (festival highlight). Day 1: leave Djerba early, stop at Matmata’s troglodyte houses (a Star Wars location), arrive in Douz for lunch, spend the afternoon at Place Hnich, then sleep at a dune camp. Day 2: watch the morning events in town, drive to Ksar Ghilane for a soak in the hot spring, and return to Djerba by evening. Aim for festival days 2 and 3, the horse and camel days.

B) 3-day southern loop. Day 1: Djerba → Matmata → Douz for the festival afternoon, night in Douz. Day 2: Douz → Kebili date palms → Chott el Djerid → Tozeur, with Ong Jemel/Mos Espa at sunset. Day 3: Tozeur → Douz (morning events) → Ksar Ghilane or Tataouine/Chenini → Djerba. Not sure whether one night is enough? Compare a day trip vs a 2-day tour.

C) Self-drive. Leave Djerba on the opening day for the parade. Spend two nights in Douz (hotel, then camp), drive to Ksar Ghilane on day 3, and return on the last day. Do the deep-dune sections with a local guide, not on your own.

Christmas and New Year: if you’re staying on, several Djerba agencies sell New Year’s Eve desert packages. The November desert tour guide covers the wider season.

Weather and what to pack

Late December in Douz means clear, dry days of about 16–18 °C with strong sun. After dark the temperature drops fast to about 5–9 °C, and it can get close to freezing on a still night in the dunes. The arena is dusty and exposed. Pack layers, a down or fleece jacket, a hat and gloves for the evening shows, sunglasses, sunscreen, a scarf or buff against blowing sand, and closed shoes. The winter desert packing list has the full checklist.

Tips for photographers and etiquette

  • Arrive early. Locals claim the best spots around Place Hnich well before the afternoon shows. Get there 60–90 minutes ahead and bring something to sit on.
  • The light is best in the late afternoon, behind the riders. Fantasia gunpowder smoke and dust look dramatic but are hard on unsealed lenses.
  • Keep a safe distance from the race track and fantasia runs. Horses and camels move fast and unpredictably.
  • Ask before photographing people, especially women and wedding parties. A smile and “mumkin?” (“may I?”) go a long way. Respect a no.
  • Dress modestly: Douz is a conservative town, and modest dress also keeps you warmer.
  • Carry small notes in dinars, because stalls, camel rides and parking are cash-only.

Is it safe? Festival security and travel advisories

The festival has a large police presence. Douz is outside the US and UK no-go areas, and it sits right on Germany’s advisory line. The US State Department rates Tunisia Level 2 (“exercise increased caution”) overall and says not to travel to the desert south of Remada, a military zone. The UK FCDO’s “all” and “all but essential” travel areas are near the Libyan and Algerian borders and in the western mountains; Douz is not among them. Germany’s Foreign Office advises against travel south and south-east of a line from the Algerian border via Tozeur/Nefta, Douz, Ksar Ghilane and Tataouine to Zarzis, so the dunes beyond town fall on the far side of it. It also advises against independent, unorganized desert tours and recommends desert trips only as organized groups with local guides. In practice: enjoy Douz and the established tourist routes, but don’t head deep into the erg on your own. Details are in the Djerba desert tour safety guide.

Prices change, and none of these tours is a festival package: each passes through Douz on a fixed route. Ask the operator whether your departure can put you in Douz on a festival afternoon.
