Djerba: Ksar Ghilane & Matmata 4x4 Sahara Guided Tour

4.6 (325 verified reviews)

About This Experience

This is the itinerary that puts Matmata and Ksar Ghilane in the same day without turning either into a photo stop, and it does it by staying small. The operator runs 4x4s and SUVs rather than buses, which is both why the group can change its plan and why it can take the mountain road and the desert track at all.

Pickup is at 6am. Once across the causeway the road climbs to Toujane, a Berber village strung along a pass and known for its honey and its weaving. Matmata comes next: the pit dwellings sunk into the ground, the Sidi Driss troglodyte hotel that served as the interior of the Lars homestead in A New Hope, and a visit to a family still living underground — rosemary tea, bread, honey and olive oil.

The afternoon is the desert. Ksar Ghilane, the hot spring, lunch, and free time on the sand before the drive home. The Roman fort of Tisavar sits within walking distance of the palms if you would rather have the ruins than the pool.

A tip at the Berber household is requested rather than included, and goes to the family directly.

A wonderful experience, unique places that we didn't expect to see. Our guide, Riyadh, made the difference. He is a great professional, knowledgeable, smiling, and very cultured. We will never forget him. Special thanks to Waalid, who transported us in the best way possible!!!!

Our tour guide Neder was excellent, and we also learned a lot about life in Tunisia. The trip was exactly as described in the offer. We took a camel ride in the desert, and it's a great experience. We highly recommend it; it was a great experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a jeep tour or a coach tour?

A 4x4 or SUV with a small group. That is what makes both the Toujane mountain road and the desert track into Ksar Ghilane possible — a coach can do neither.

Does it go inside the Sidi Driss hotel?

Matmata's troglodyte hotel is on the route. The interior is a working restaurant, so access depends on the day; the pit dwellings and the Berber family visit are fixed parts of the stop.

Can I swim at Ksar Ghilane on a day trip?

Yes — the afternoon stop includes free time at the oasis and its spring-fed pool before lunch.

What time do you get back?

A full day out of a 6am pickup, so expect to reach your hotel in Djerba or Zarzis in the evening.
