About This Experience

At $48 this is the cheapest way to sleep in the Sahara from Djerba, and the price is not a warning about the product — it is geography. Two-day desert tours sold out of Hammamet or Sousse spend most of their first day on a motorway getting to where Djerba already is.

Day one crosses the causeway, stops at the Chahbania salt flat, and reaches Tataouine in time to walk the market. Chenini gets a guided visit: a Berber village built in tiers up a ridge, granary cells cut into the rock above it and a white mosque on the crest. Lunch is Berber and eaten there.

The afternoon crosses the stony desert to Ksar Ghilane for the hot spring, with camel and quad rides available on the spot, and finishes at a tented camp — sunset, sand bread baked in the embers, dinner, and a sky with nothing in it.

Day two is Matmata, where the houses are dug down into the ground rather than built up from it, and the mountain village of Toujane, before the road back to the island.

The driver picked us up from the hotel, and then we joined 2 wonderful people with whom we experienced this adventure together until the end. We stopped very often along the way, discovering new places one after the other, and we had the opportunity to use the restroom or buy snacks every now and then. The organizer made sure we had water. Each stop was very interesting. The camp located in the oasis was incredibly well-organized. There was a small restaurant, plenty of toilets, hot showers, electricity in the tents (most of the time), and it was warm. We had a lot of activities. We had a local dinner, the opportunity to see the sunset on quads (available for purchase), and at night we could admire the stars in the desert. The next day, after breakfast, we set off on the return journey, during which we also had a few unusual stops. We recommend this tour. The guide is great, and the small group is a plus.

What is the camp actually like?

A permanent tented camp on the sand — fixed tents with bedding, a shared dinner, an evening around a fire. It is not luxury and it is not roughing it.

Does it include Star Wars locations?

Matmata on day two, which is where the Sidi Driss hotel stood in for the interior of the Lars homestead. Whether that stop enters the hotel varies by departure — ask at booking if it matters.

Is this a coach tour?
