Djerba & Zarzis: Ksar Ghilane & Tataouine Sahara 4x4 Tour

About This Experience
Eight hours rather than ten or eleven, and the shortest run on this site that still reaches real sand. It is the 4x4 itinerary for people who want the driving to be part of the point.
The route leaves the island and works south to the ksour above Tataouine, where the stacked granary cells stand on the ridge lines, then drops off the tarmac onto desert track for the approach to Ksar Ghilane. That last stretch is the part a coach cannot do, and it is why the vehicle matters here more than on the road tours.
At the oasis there is the warm spring, the palms, and time to swim before lunch. A full menu lunch is included, as is the guide, and the operator's own framing of the day is a Star Wars route — the ksour around Tataouine are the country the saga was shot in, and Ksar Hadada is the confirmed set among them.
It is a shorter day than the ten-hour circuits, and it buys that by making fewer village stops rather than by cutting the desert short.

What Travelers Say

Wonderful trip, we really want to say thank you to Walid. Everything was well organised. It would be great to spend more time on Sahara and in the village from Star Wars but we enjoyed it anyway.

Our live guide was really very nice. They took great care of us. The detour is really worth it. A total change of scenery. It was very enjoyable to do all this in a 4WD.

We had a wonderful trip with ZOU. Extremely kind and took us to some very interesting places. Would definitely do it again. Thank you for a wonderful trip - our kids really enjoyed it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does eight hours mean you see less?
Fewer village stops, not less desert. The saving comes out of the roadside halts rather than out of the time at Ksar Ghilane.
How rough is the off-road section?
The approach to the oasis is soft sand and track, driven in a 4x4. It is bumpy rather than alarming, but it is not a smooth ride and it is the reason a coach cannot make this trip.
Which film locations does it take in?
The ksour above Tataouine. Ksar Hadada, the confirmed Mos Espa slave-quarters set from The Phantom Menace, is the one worth planning around; see the filming-locations guide for what is real and what is marketing.
Is the camel ride included?
No. Camel and quad rides are arranged at Ksar Ghilane and paid there.
