About This Experience

The selling point of this itinerary is what it leaves out. It takes the quieter routes through the mountains and gives Ksar Ghilane extended free time instead of the usual hour, so the oasis becomes somewhere you sit rather than somewhere you photograph on the way past.

The country changes as you go: causeway, plain, then the folded rock of the Dahar. Matmata is the cultural stop — pit dwellings dug down into the ground rather than built up out of it, and the Sidi Driss hotel, which served as the interior of the Lars homestead in A New Hope. The decor was struck after the 1977 shoot and rebuilt in 2000 for Attack of the Clones, which is why what you walk into looks like the film rather than like a ruin of it.

At the oasis there is the warm spring, the dunes, tea, and a camel ride if you want one. Lunch is a traditional Tunisian meal.

Groups are small and the vehicle is a 4x4, which is a practical necessity rather than a flourish — the last stretch into Ksar Ghilane is not a road.

Great excursion. Definitely worth it, even though it lasts 12 hours. We would book it again and again

I highly recommend this tour with Mr. F. and Mr. Salem. They are very informative, friendly, and always attentive. The tour was excellent, with pleasant and reassuring driving. He was able to explain things to us clearly along the way, which made the experience even more enriching. Thank you to Mr. F for this experience; everything went really well!

Frequently Asked Questions

How big is the group?

Small, and travelling by 4x4 rather than coach — which is also what allows the desert track into Ksar Ghilane.

Which Star Wars location is included?

The Sidi Driss cave hotel at Matmata, which is the interior of the Lars homestead in A New Hope. The homestead's exterior dome is on Chott el Jerid, roughly 300km west, and the Mos Espa set is near Nefta — neither is reachable in a day from Djerba.

How much time do you actually get at the oasis?

Extended free time rather than a fixed slot. The itinerary drops stops other routes make in order to buy it, which is the whole trade this tour offers.

Is a swimsuit worth packing?

Yes. The spring-fed pool is the main reason people linger at Ksar Ghilane, and there is nowhere on site to hire a towel.
