About This Experience

Nothing else in the Djerba catalogue comes close to this one on volume — 1,671 guests have rated it, roughly two in five of every review the island's desert operators have collected between them. That is worth knowing before you compare itineraries, because it means the day has been run enough times to have stopped improvising.

You are collected around 6am and off the island by causeway before the light is up. Breakfast is at Ghrabat. The morning belongs to the Dahar, the stone plateau where the fortified granaries stand: Ksar Hadada, whose stacked mud-brick cells played the Mos Espa slave quarters in The Phantom Menace, gets about 35 minutes with a guide, and Guermassa — a Berber village half-abandoned on its ridge — follows.

The afternoon is Ksar Ghilane, and three hours there is unusually generous. It is the most southerly of the Tunisian oases, sitting on the eastern edge of the Grand Erg Oriental, and the pool at its centre is fed by a warm spring you can swim in. The Roman castellum of Tisavar stands under a kilometre away — a border post on the limes Tripolitanus, built no later than the reign of Commodus. Camel and quad rides wait at the oasis and are paid for on the day.

Lunch at a traditional restaurant is included, along with round-trip transport in an air-conditioned vehicle, the guide and tour insurance. Guides work in English, French, Italian and Arabic. It is a long day, some of it on rough ground, and the operator asks pregnant travellers to choose a gentler itinerary.

It was absolutely unforgettable!!!! With my whole 10 days in Djerba that I stayed with my 2 kids and my wife. this was by far the best time I had and experience in Tunisia, our guide and driver were amazing. Our driver Fatty h was unbelievably fantastic and so kind. I miss him already, the whole experience was just out of this world, would highly recommend to anyone. 10 stars all the way, thankyou so much for such a fantastic beautiful trip and experience, Josh from the uk.

Excellent day trip, very good live guide. Photo stops at various locations with clear and interesting explanations. In addition, there was the possibility of making stops along the way, regardless of our needs. Friendly staff no matter where. Visit to beautiful places!!

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the day out of Djerba?

About ten hours door to door. Pickups begin around 6am across Djerba and Zarzis, and most guests are back at their hotel in the early evening.

Is three hours at Ksar Ghilane really longer than other tours give?

It is at the generous end. Several Djerba itineraries stop at the oasis for around an hour, which covers a look at the pool and little else. Three hours is enough to swim, dry off, walk out to the dunes and still take the camel ride.

Can you swim in the hot spring?

Yes. Ksar Ghilane's pool is fed by a warm spring and stays swimmable through the year. Bring a swimsuit and a towel — there is nowhere to hire either.

Which Star Wars location does this one actually visit?

Ksar Hadada, which stood in for the Mos Espa slave quarters in The Phantom Menace. The Sidi Driss cave hotel at Matmata is on other Djerba itineraries, and the Mos Espa set itself is 300km west near Nefta — not reachable in a day from the island.

Is lunch included?

Yes, a traditional Tunisian lunch at a local restaurant. Drinks are not, at lunch or anywhere else.
