From Djerba: Star Wars and Sunset in the Tataouine Desert

About This Experience

Two deserts in a day, and the sunset at the end of it. This is the Star Wars circuit run as a landscape day rather than a set-hunting one, which is the honest way to sell it: the sites are real, and the country between them is the reason the saga was shot here at all.

You leave Djerba early and cross into the rocky south. Ksar Hadada comes first — the stacked granary that played the Mos Espa slave quarters — and Ksar Ouled Soltane, four storeys of ghorfa cells around a courtyard, follows. Whether Ouled Soltane itself appeared on film is disputed; it is on the itinerary because it is the finest surviving ksar in the region, not because of the credit.

Guermassa, a perched Berber village most routes drive past, comes next, then the salt lake, which behaves like a mirror when the wind drops.

The day finishes in the Chahbania dunes for sunset — the part the itinerary is built around, and the reason the return is after dark. Lunch is typical and included, and the guide is professional rather than a driver with a commentary.
