About This Experience

This is southern Tunisia's stonework rather than its sand — the country of fortified granaries and hill villages that lent Tatooine its name. If you want the ksour and can live without the dunes, it is the shorter, cheaper and less punishing day.

Pickup is at 7am, an hour later than the Ksar Ghilane runs, and the first stop is the Chahbania salt flat while the light is still low. Tataouine follows, with free time in a market where haggling is the expected register rather than an option.

Chenini is the centrepiece. The village climbs a ridge in tiers, the granary cells are cut into the rock above the houses, and a white mosque sits on the crest. The walking tour lasts 30 to 40 minutes and it is genuinely steep — around forty Amazigh families still live here, and the paths were built for them, not for visitors.

Entry to Ksar Hadada is included, which matters: it is the one confirmed Star Wars set on this circuit, standing in for the Mos Espa slave quarters in The Phantom Menace. Lunch is traditional, and the return crosses the plateau in the late afternoon.

What Travelers Say

This was our second tour in a row with a great guide, Mr. Montana. As usual, with his obvious passion, he shared a wealth of knowledge with us with a smile on his face. It's always a shame to part with people like him, but I highly recommend him!

Great day trip with a live guide, Montana, who was very friendly, and a driver, Ameur, who talked to us about Tunisia while driving, which made the car rides seem shorter.

— Christelle, Septemb

Great experience! Our live guide "Montana" and our driver Walid were excellent. It was an incredible day: the food tasting was delicious, the Berber village was amazing, and the meal was a treat. I would definitely recommend it. It was a very enriching day with beautiful scenery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this tour reach the Sahara?

Not the dunes. It covers the ksour and Berber villages of the Dahar plateau. For sand and the hot spring you want a Ksar Ghilane tour instead.

Why is Tataouine connected to Star Wars?

The planet Tatooine takes its name from the town. Of the ksour around it, Ksar Hadada is the one confirmed as a set — it played the Mos Espa slave quarters in The Phantom Menace. Ksar Ouled Soltane is widely described as a location too, and that claim is disputed.

How hard is the Chenini walk?

Steep for 30 to 40 minutes, on uneven rock, in the sun. It is the only demanding part of the day, and the rest of the itinerary is gentle.

Is lunch included?

Yes, a traditional Berber lunch. Drinks and anything you buy in the market are not.
