Tataouine & Chenini: Full-Day Guided Tour

4.6 (157 verified reviews)

About This Experience

The same ground as the jeep tours, driven on tarmac. If a full day of desert track sounds like more than you want — or you are travelling with someone for whom it would be — this is the version that keeps the ksour and drops the off-roading.

A driver collects you on Djerba and the day opens on the old Roman causeway off the island, with a photo stop at Chahbania where the salt flats begin. Tataouine's market is the first long halt: an hour to walk it, and haggling is expected.

Chenini follows, with a local guide who takes you through the oil mill, the mosque, the houses cut into the mountain wall and the granary above them. Ksar Hadada — the mud-brick granary north of town, and the Phantom Menace's Mos Espa slave quarters — is the other set-piece; the hand-painted board at its gate still names George Lucas and July 1997.

Lunch is included. Both the driver and the guide are tourism-office licensed, which on this route is the difference between a commentary and a lift.

Great small-group tour with air-conditioned vehicle 😁. Stunning scenery, especially in Chenini, where we enjoyed a tour accompanied by a local guide. The meal was very good, with typical Tunisian dishes. Thank you to our guide, Mohammed, for all his explanations throughout the day, and to our driver, Nasser. I would 100% recommend this tour.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from the 4x4 tours to the same places?

It is driven on asphalt. You get Tataouine, Chenini and Ksar Hadada without a day of desert track, and you do not get the dunes or the Ksar Ghilane hot spring, which need a 4x4 to reach.

Is Ksar Hadada really a Star Wars set?

Yes — it played the Mos Espa slave quarters in The Phantom Menace, and the sign at the gate dates the shoot to July 1997. Ksar Ouled Soltane is often listed alongside it; that attribution is disputed and probably wrong.

What is the Chahbania stop?

A salt flat just over the causeway on the mainland side, crossed early enough that the light still makes the crust worth photographing.

How long is the day?

A full day — morning pickup, evening return — and most of it is spent out of the vehicle.
